Din Ho introduced me to authentic Chinese food and I have been a fan ever since. I love going to Din Ho with a big group and sitting at a table with a lazy Susan. Din Ho has a great variety of choices and even my least adventurous family members have found items that they like (although they still miss the sesame chicken from the Chinatown on Bee Caves.) They have improved their decor over the years but I worry that the food has slipped a bit in quality. They are not as aware of food allergies as I would like and if you have dietary restrictions I would recommend going to Pao's Mandarin House or the Chinatown on Greystone. Also for the best authentic Chinese that Austin offers I would rather go to First China BBQ. Din Ho still shines for me because it is conveniently located for me, holds a special place in my heart and has a great selection of sea food.

Heard so much about this place that I had to give it a shot. My wife and I were super excited about trying the "best Chinese in Austin". We visited on a Sunday evening and the place was packed - line out the door. They had a system in place for taking your party's name, but we didn't know what was going on until a guy walked by us with a clipboard. All in all, we had to wait about 35 minutes to be seated, which isn't too bad considering how crowded they were. I had read the reviews and two items, Peking Duck & BBQ Pork kept rising to the top. My family isn't as adventurous as I when it comes to food, so the duck was out. The left me with the BBQ Pork. Service was a bit slow, but we placed our order for the pork, Orange Chicken, and egg rolls. The egg rolls tasted different than I've had before. There was an unusual spice that I couldn't place. It caught me by surprise and I wouldn't order them again. The BBQ pork arrived and it looked very good. However, when I took my first bite, it was lukewarm at best. Parts of the dish were actually cold. Very disappointing. The texture wasn't crispy, but more like a Texas brisket. Flavor was unremarkable. Not good, not bad, just eh. Combined with being mediocre in temp, and it was a dish I wish I hadn't ordered. The orange chicken, on the other hand, was all kinds of horrible. Had they used good quality chicken, it may have been one of the better dishes on the menu, but it was more fat than it was chicken. Such a shame. I wonder how this place has received the rave reviews it has garnished. Is the duck really that good? Possibly, but I didn't see many people eating that.I recommend you try Hao Hao in Round Rock if you're looking for some delicious Chinese food.

Came here for a good Chinese fix. My tastes in Asian food must be a little more American than I thought, because what I got at Din Ho was NOTHING like I thought it would be. Not that it was bad per se, just not the delicious stir fried bits of meet in brown sauce with rice that I've come to expect from most places. The portions are huge, so come hungry. I ordered some egg drop soup and we got a huge bowl that fed 4 people with leftovers. They were very busy on a Sunday evening and our waiter was a little rude. I thought it was peculiar/snarky that they won't let you substitute steamed for fried rice on regular combo dishes. All the meat products seem very fresh, very authentic, and are genuinely delicious... just be prepared for bone-in, whole animal style meat. Very unique if your Asian staple is Pei Wei.

We tried to call the day before so we could at least try to make a reservation, but they wouldn't answer the phone, so we ended up waiting over 90 minutes for a table. Food was just so-so. Austin must suffer from a lack of quality Chinese food because there are at least a dozen places in Houston that would blow this place away. We shared several dishes and about an hour after we finished, every one of our family members became nauseous from some sort of food poisoning. It pains me to write a bad review about a restaurant I really love, but godDAMN that was some fucked up shiat. The food, as always, was great. We had the chicken, crab, and corn soup to start, and it was amazing to pour such warm goodness down one's gullet when its been cold as balls outside and even colder inside the ancient and drafty house we currently inhabit. But I digress. For entress we had the scallops and shrimp in garlic sauce, and the marinated chicken and barbecue pork. Yum, yum, meh, and super yum (respectively). At this point we've been in the joint all of half an hour and were already wrapping up, because I guess we were hungry as bears or the food was that good, but at any rate we certainly werent dilly-dallying. Its 40 minutes before closing, and homegirl waitress woman starts vacuuming. Its fucking rude, even if it had been 5 minutes before they were about to close. But you know what? I work in retail, and I get it, sister girl mightve had a bad day or her feet hurt or she had a man to get home to. Ive been there, and we were about to leave anyway so I didnt get too hurt about it.But then another lady started mopping, RIGHT NEXT TO US. We were the first table in front of the kitchen, and she just went to town on the floor right next to our feet like it werent no thang. A bucket of clorox is not the scent I want wafting by my nostrils as I take my last bite of the deliciousness Id been looking forward to all week. It really isnt. That just aint right. And its so wrong that I seriously doubt I'll ever come back. All I wanted to do was love you, Din Ho, but you just couldnt let me.

I thought I'd be updating my review because I came here last year for a proper Jewish Christmas celebration, but here I am writing a first time review. Apparently my nap during "The Artist" and my later nap at home caused me to not review the completely AMAZING food at Din Ho. This year, I came back and then went to see "Les Miserables" and let me say: Me gusta la comida Din Ho!Last year? Duck. This year? DUCK! It's almost just like Jay-Z says. "Concrete Duck-zone where eats are served up, the food ain't fondue." That could have been the re-write I made up for my dog, but I digress. This year I also sampled the barbecue pork AND the fried pork. I'm really thinking that Austin has no more option but to completely embrace this place as Austin's go-to Chinese place. The service was slow, but we came at an incredibly busy time. The food is better than good. The skin on the duck and the duck and the pork and the miso soup and the snow-pea-leaves/spinach/whatever-it-was. My party talked for a while and then ate. We took a break to talk about how we needed to pause before we kept eating. But it wasn't normal. It's a whole new level of eating.I'm happy to say that Din Ho brought me back to that level. Again.

Their service is less than desirable which is why they lost one star for me. You have to flag people down to get water, or condiments, etc. I guess they are always busy so they don't really care about tips, service etc. Now, the food is great! We always get one order of BBQ pork, which I think they are pretty well known for. Some of our usual favorites are the sauteed snow pea leaves with garlic, their sizzling scallops, their orange beef and chicken are both good if you want something more americanized, and their flat noodles are tasty and surely home made.My three favorite Chinese places in Austin are Din Ho, Asia Cafe, and Sichuan Garden. This restaurant is an hour away from me, but it's soooo worth the drive for authentic Chinese cuisine. Where we live, there's a lot of so-called Chinese restaurants, but they're all Americanized. I am of Asian descent, and I can honestly say that the restaurants around here are in no way authentic, to put it nicely (and not offend anyone). The first time we came here, we had to wait due to it being so busy and packed. Starved and intoxicated with the lingering smell of Chinese food, it didn't help that there were roasted ducks and a pig hanging on a rack tempting us near the waiting area. Finally, we were seated...Din Ho has a multitude of entrees to choose from. There's even a menu on the wall written in Chinese. I wish I can decipher what it says.. maybe it even offers meals "off the menu." But, I'm content with what the regular menu has to offer. What I did notice is that the waiters do not play around... patience is definitely not a virtue here. We were asked by 4 different wait staff what we wanted to order in a span of 5 minutes. Feeling rushed, we just ordered whatever caught our eye. Our food came out quickly, and everything was so good.My second visit, the food was equally as good. But, this time I went on a weekday and it was much more serene. Our waiter was very patient. It was also very nice of him to pack our food in a box with a bag of ice knowing that we were going to be in Austin for a bit and having to drive an hour back home.Definitely will be back!

For the longest time, this was the only Chinese BBQ choice in town. Enjoying its monopoly, you had to put up with Din Ho's salty food, crowded waiting area, and limited availability in BBQ.Din Ho's BBQ pork is sweet and smokey - a little dark. The BBQ duck is also on the smokey side. First Chinese BBQ on Lamar at Braker in the new Chinatown complex is a much better choice, but Din Ho has the benefit of its location and late hours which attracts UT students looking for late night nosh.If you're ordering BBQ, call ahead, because Din Ho runs out of BBQ pork and duck quite often. The staff is short-fused and impatient, so it doesn't help asking for explanations. If you're staying for dinner, they have an extensive and inexpensive Cantonese menu that is flavorful but over salted. Wonton soup is wonderful. So are the noodle dishes. The English descriptions in the menu aren't the most helpful, so definitely ask questions if you're not sure what you want.Din Ho now has competition for BBQ - and that includes the superb Ho Ho Chinese BBQ (35/Parmer) and First Chinese BBQ (Braker/Lamar). Try all of them - their BBQ spices are all different.

Mmmm Din Ho. A standard favorite. Austin's long been hurting for some good Asian food, but for years Din Ho has been a pretty solid choice among the top in Chinese offerings. So, it's remarkable for Austin, and even on an absolute scale, it's pretty delicious.Order something new and different when you go. As has been said, the menu is so big! So branch out and try something new. Here's some favorites:Meat: of course the BBQ Pork & Beijing duck; any sizzling platterSeafood: Plum sauce w/ fish fillet; sizzling oyster w/ black pepperSoup: Crab meat w/ fish maw; crab meat with asparagusVeggies: Water spinach; Snow Pea LeavesNoodles: Singaporean-style noodles; pan-fried flat noodlesThey do the Americanized dishes really well, too, which I hate to say because I want people to try new things. But if you really must have your sesame chicken (which, okay, sometimes you're just craving sesame chicken), you'll get it done really well here.Service-wise I've never experienced any rudeness that was completely unacceptable. And for all the people who are saying they're rude if you're not Asian, I don't think that's true. I've been in with groups of varying ethnic backgrounds, and it's the same level of aloofness that you'd expect at any Chinese restaurant, which is fine with me. And they do have certain servers that are quite attentive.Anyway, I assume everyone in Austin is familiar with Din Ho, but if you're new here or haven't gone, give it a try.

I've been looking for the "best" Chinese place in Austin and I think I might finally have found it. After failing to get any reliable suggestions from friends that have lived here for a while, I stumbled across Din Ho Chinese BBQ while plotting my Friday dinner and decided to check it out.I was originally worried that a 6:30pm Friday arrival time would result in a lengthy wait but the restaurant was only about half full. It did start to get pretty crowded a little after 7pm, so watch out for that if you plan on arriving a little later.Service was prompt and unemotional, which is to be expected for this type of simple Chinese venue. The menu is overwhelmingly extensive, with soups, noodles, and rice dishes galore featuring veggies, chicken, beef, pork, seafood, and everything in-between. For those of you that prefer things like General Tso's Chicken, fear not, they have it (how dare you!). After ordering, it took about 5 minutes for our food to be delivered complete with the largest serving of (free) steamed rice that I've seen in a Chinese restaurant. Seriously, I don't know how many restaurants I've been to that only give small bowls or try to charge you for it.We ordered the Chicken Lo Mein and the BBQ Pork, both of which were less than $9 and were almost enough for two people separately. The lo mein was excellent and toed the line between being too dry and too saucy almost perfectly. If you want to avoid super salty foods, then this probably isn't the best dish (or restaurant) for you to be eating. The serving size of the BBQ Pork was much larger than anticipated and sadly much of it was relegated to leftovers. The pork wasn't overly sweet, which seems to be a common problem for many Chinese BBQ dishes. It was well cooked and almost melts in your mouth. I'd highly recommend you try one of their BBQ dishes as the general consensus seems to be they are the "best" offerings at this restaurant.I definitely will be coming back here in the future for my Chinese food cravings. They also do hot pot, so I'll be checking that out in the near future (hopefully). Plus there's a bubble tea shop right next door!

Stop reading this right now and go eat here.Oh okay fine; keep reading, but THEN go here. This review is short and sweet because Din Ho needs no lengthy explanation. The bbq pork and duck are excellent, though I recommend ordering them separately as opposed to the 1 combo dish (just tend to get better, juicier pieces). The menu is gigantic so everyone can find something they like from classic Chinese staples (Kung Pao chicken, broccoli beef) to sizzling seafood hot pots and all kinds of funky stuff. The prices are extremely reasonable ($8-$15) given the huge portion size of each dish (definitely splittable between two). The place is always crowded though...obviously because it rules...so service might be a little slow. But those waiters are running around and working their tails off so go easy on them. Now off to consume my still-freaking-amazing leftovers...
